What is Yoga?

Yoga, which means "unity" or "harmony," is both a philosophical system and a science whose goal is the attainment of self awareness. Hatha Yoga, which is an umbrella term that encompasses the physical practice of yoga, offers us the opportunity to deepen our self understanding through asana (postures), pranayama(breathwork) and meditation.

I have never done yoga before, how do I get started?

There are several ways for people to get started with yoga at Namaste. First, be sure to check our schedule page and look for classes that are Level I or All Levels. These classes are suitable for beginners. Namaste Yoga also offers a regular workshop called Yoga 101. This workshop is designed to give new students the basics and help them understand the different styles of yoga available at our studio. You can learn more about this class by clicking here.

Is it safe to do yoga if I have an injury or medical condition?

In most cases the answer to that question is yes. In fact yoga is excellent way to support the body in its healing process. However, you will want to inform your doctor or health care provider before you begin your practice, and be sure to let your teacher know what is going on so they can address your specific needs.

What style of yoga is right for me?

There are many different styles of yoga . Some styles are fast paced and vigorous while others are very gentle and slow-moving. All of the styles of yoga have benefits, so evaluating your individual needs and personality type will help point you in the right direction. You can read a description of the style of yoga offered at Namaste Yoga by clicking here.

Yoga is a great way to support you body and the newly forming body of your child. There are some precautions however, so you will want to let your doctor and your teacher know that you are pregnant (especially if you are in your first trimester). I am physically fit - Do I still need a beginners class?

In Yoga, beginner does not indicate level of intensity, it indicates level of instruction. We will teach you the basic postures and concepts, like breathing. However you will still receive a good physical workout. You can still go to a non-beginner class, however please do not attend level II-III classes until you have learned the postures to avoid injuries.
